WHERE IS THE PROMISE OF HIS COMING?

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Evening, November 24, 2019

“This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour” (II Peter 3:1, 2; p. 1319 Scofield).

What does the Apostle Peter tell us to remember? We should remember the words spoken by the holy prophets. We should remember the words spoken by the Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ. And what did the prophets and Apostles tell us? Look at verses three and four.

1.  There shall come in the last days scoffers (II Peter 3:3).

2.  These scoffers will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (II Peter 3:4).

I could go on and speak of the Flood in Noah’s time to show these “scoffers” are wrong. But I am simply quoting the question these scoffers ask,

“Where is the promise of his coming? [for] all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (II Peter 3:4).

That is the error that destroys these “scoffers.” It is a lie! All things do not “continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” No, they do not!

I. First, the mockers do not know or understand Bible prophecy.

The Bible says, “They shall turn away their ears from the truth” (II Timothy 4:4; p. 1281). We might expect this from the old liberals, like Harry Emerson Fosdick. But today “fundamental” Baptists have mostly stopped preaching on the Second Coming of Christ. David W. Cloud had a recent article titled, “Baptist Churches Not Preaching on the Second Coming.” Cloud correctly said, “The return of Jesus Christ is a major New Testament doctrine, and the preaching of it is essential to holy living. It was emphasized by Christ. It was a major theme of Apostolic preaching in the Book of Acts. It is mentioned in nearly every epistle...The return of Christ must, therefore be a fundamental part of every believer’s worldview, a major theme of all Biblical preaching...But there are signs that preaching on Bible prophecy is being neglected even among [so called] ‘fundamentalist’ churches.” Then David Cloud quoted a Baptist preacher who said, “I have heard more from you today about the second coming than I have for months in other fundamental Baptist churches.” This was from a man who preaches regularly [in fundamental Baptist churches] across the country. Another man wrote to Brother Cloud that “prophecy preaching has all but gone away.” Cloud said, “This is a serious matter. Preachers who neglect [prophecy] are rebels against God’s Word and are not qualified for the ministry” (O Timothy Magazine, November 2019, p. 23). The “scoffers” are now speaking in the pulpits of many of the most “fundamental” Baptist churches in America! We should not be too surprised. It was predicted in the Word of God,

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (II Timothy 4:2-4; p. 1281).

Where is the promise of His coming?

Dr. M. R. DeHaan wrote a book titled, Coming Events in Prophecy (Zondervan, 1962). Dr. Louis T. Talbot was long the chancellor of what is now called Biola University. Dr. Talbot said of DeHaan’s book, “It is my heart’s desire that [“Coming Events in Prophecy” be read by] young ministers who are wavering in their views of these prophetic truths” (Foreword to Dr. DeHaan’s book, Coming Events in Prophecy). But you will never hear of Dr. DeHaan and his book at Biola University today!! God help us!

Where is the promise of His coming?

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (II Timothy 4:3, 4; p. 1281).

II. Second, the “scoffers” of the last days are deceived by Satan
and his demons.

The Bible gives this sign of Christ’s coming,

“In the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (I Timothy 4:1; p. 1276).

Dr. Merrill F. Unger received his Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins. He wrote Unger’s Bible Handbook. He was a long-time professor at the prestigious Dallas Theological Seminary. Dr. Unger wrote of the demonic activity of the last days. Dr. Unger said, “At last there will be nothing to hold back the full manifestation of [Satan’s] diabolical powers which will then burst upon a Christ-rejecting world with shocking violence and unbridled fury” (Biblical Demonology, Kregel Publications, 1994, p. 206).

Satan has prepared most young people today for this diabolical, demonic deluge. He has prepared them for the violence and horrors of this through rock music and through the movies – like “The Exorcist,” and through “Joker.” “Joker” is the number one movie seen by young people today.

I do not want you to see “Joker.” It is a ghastly, horrible, demonic movie. Do not let Hollywood twist your mind by seeing it. Critics are saying that movies like “Joker” are behind the mass murders taking place on high school and college campuses all over America in our time.

Because “Joker” is so popular among young people, Dr. Cagan and I went to see it for ourselves last week. It is the story of a young man becoming a demon possessed mass murderer. Please do not see it. Dr. Cagan will agree with me when I say it could do you great harm to see it. Don’t do it!!!

Every preacher in America should warn their young people not to let Satan ensnare them through the horror of this movie!

Drugs, twisted sex, murder and violence in the movies have opened thousands of young people to Satan and his demons! I myself could not sleep after watching it. I wish we had not gone at all!

The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8; p. 1315).

Where is the promise of His coming?

III. Third, the “scoffers” of the last days become hardened against godliness.

Again, listen to these words of Scripture,

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron” (I Timothy 4:1-2; p. 1276).

Notice verse two, “Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron” (I Timothy 4:2).

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts”
         (II Peter 3:3; p. 1319).

Each time a young person decides to “make out” they sear their conscience with a hot iron. Each time they smoke they harden their conscience with a hot iron. Each time they laugh at preaching like this and call it “legalistic” they harden their conscience with a hot iron.

I have seen many young people (and older ones too) who have been hardened against God by “playing” with sin. I have seen young men who thought they were strong, fall under the grip of demons. Dr. Unger said, “It is a matter of frequent observation that a sinful tendency, long indulged, becomes a fixed habit, and a fixed habit, in the course of time, becomes an unalterable destiny” (Unger, ibid., p. 215). I have seen young people listen to the demons and become hardened against godly parents, good Christians, and their own pastors. Lust after a beautiful woman led Samson to his death. Lust after more money led to Achan’s judgment. Refusal to bear the cross led Demas to forsake the Apostle Paul, “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world” (II Timothy 4:10; p. 1281). Step by step they are demonically led to be “despisers of those that are good” (II Timothy 3:3; p. 1281).

Dr. A. W. Tozer was called “a modern day prophet.” Dr. Tozer spoke to great crowds of young people who came to hear him on Sunday nights. They knew that Dr. Tozer would tell them the truth. Hear him now as he gives these words to you from beyond the grave,

The way of the cross is still the pain-wracked path to spiritual power and fruitfulness. So do not hide from it. Do not accept an easy way. Do not allow yourself to be patted to sleep in a comfortable church, void of power and barren of fruit. Do not paint the cross, do not deck it with flowers. Take it for what it is, and you will find it the rugged way to death and life. Let it slay you utterly. Seek God. Seek to be holy and fear none of those things which you will suffer (“Coddled or Crucified?”).

Whatever your carnal mother says, or what your so-called “friends” say – follow after “holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14; p. 1303).

And one more thing – remember that “there are certain men crept in unawares... ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 4; p. 1328). “These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit” (Jude 19; p. 1329).

And learn to be a soul winner. Learn how to do it. God’s Word says, “He that winneth souls is wise” (Proverbs 11:30; p. 680). Real soul-winners are given grace and wisdom to live a good Christian life, which protects them from the evil in the world today. Stand and sing, “I Will Make You Fishers of Men.” Now sing, “Win One for the Lord.”
