BY HIS BLOOD WE ARE CLEANSED!

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Saturday Evening, February 10, 2018

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not” (Isaiah 53:3).

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities...and with his stripes [by His wounds] we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Three Sunday nights ago I preached a sermon on the need for Christ’s Blood (“With or Without Blood”). There were two points in the sermon. First, what will happen to you without Christ’s Blood. Second, what will happen to you if you have Christ’s Blood.

I only mentioned Hell in two brief paragraphs at the beginning of the first point. Then I spent the rest of point one on sin. I said that without the Blood of Jesus, “There is no freedom from your sin. No deliverance from your sin. No liberty from your sin. No forgiveness of your sin.” Then I went to point two, “What will happen to you if you have the Blood of Jesus.” I spent four whole pages proclaiming the wonderful power of Christ’s Blood “to erase your sin,” “to pardon your sin,” “to deliver you from your sin,” “to set you at liberty from your sin,” “to forgive your sin,” and “to take you to Heaven.” I said that those in Heaven will sing that they are “redeemed by Christ’s Blood.” I quoted Fanny Crosby’s hymn, “Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb.” I quoted Spurgeon as saying, “A bloodless gospel...is a gospel of devils.” I quoted Charles Wesley’s hymn, which says,

His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.
   (“O For a Thousand Tongues” by Charles Wesley, 1707-1788).

I had you sing that hymn. Then I had you sing, “There is power, power, wonder working power In the precious blood of the Lamb” (by Lewis E. Jones, 1865-1936). In fact I had you sing it three times! Then I quoted a paragraph from Octavius Winslow, a great preacher of the 19th century, who said, “Kneel before Christ and have your conscience cleansed by that blood, which pardons, covers, and cancels all your guilt.” Then I quoted Spurgeon saying to a young man, “Come to Jesus Himself. He will wash away your sins in His precious Blood.” Then I quoted the hymn “Just As I Am” which says that Jesus’ Blood “was shed for me.” Then I ended the sermon by saying, “Trust Jesus, come to Jesus, be washed clean from your sins by the precious Blood of Jesus.” I don’t know how I could have made it any clearer!

In the Sunday morning sermon that day, Mr. John Samuel Cagan preached on “The Preeminence of Christ.” Mr. Cagan finished that sermon by quoting Colossians 1:14,

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”

Then Mr. Cagan said, “His Blood will atone for your sin. Throw yourself on His mercy. He alone can redeem you from your sin by His Blood. I pray that you will trust Jesus today.” Mr. Cagan’s sermon was given after Mr. Griffith sang “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded,” which extols the bloody sacrifice of Christ for our sins. Oh, and my sermon was preceded by Mr. Griffith singing, “There is a Fountain” by William Cowper – which says,

There is a fountain filled with blood,
   Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
   Lose all their guilty stains.

Yet all of that preaching and singing about the sin-cleansing Blood of Jesus made no impression at all on many of you lost people who heard it! None at all! One girl came to see me after the evening sermon. I said, “Kneel down and trust Jesus.” She looked at me with anger and said, “No!” I could hardly believe it! Why had she come to see me? Did she think that coming to see me would save her? I was astonished! Then a young man came to see me. He had tears in his eyes, so I thought he might be under conviction of sin. But, no. He was only afraid of going to Hell, which I had hardly mentioned in my sermon! He was afraid of going to Hell! That was all! He did not mention anything about his sin. And he did not say one word – not one word – about the Blood of Jesus and its power to cleanse his sin! Not one word – although he had heard about the cleansing power of Jesus’ Blood all day – from John Cagan’s sermon Sunday morning until my sermon Sunday night. Even all those hymns on the Blood of Jesus to cleanse sin were not mentioned. It was as though he had not heard one word about the cleansing power of Jesus’ Blood all day – not one word did he remember!

Why did that girl come with an angry face, not thinking for one minute about Jesus’ love and bleeding sacrifice for sin? Why did that young man come out of fear of Hell – without one word about the sin-cleansing Blood of Jesus? The answer is in our first text,

“He is despised and rejected of men... and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not” (Isaiah 53:3).

My dear friends, it takes a miracle of grace to cause lost sinners to stop despising and rejecting Jesus. It takes the work of the Holy Spirit to awaken a lost sinner to stop hiding his face from Jesus – and to esteem His bleeding sacrifice for the cleansing of sin.

Our second text tells you what Jesus did to save you, even though until now you despised and rejected Him and His saving Blood. Even though you rejected Him and His Blood,

“He was wounded for [your] transgressions, he was bruised for [your] iniquities...and with his [wounds you] are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Before I preached that Sunday night I read the testimonies of two young women who attended Spurgeon’s church. Of the first one it was said,

Her heart remained hard until she heard Mr. Spurgeon preach. She became very afraid of judgment for her sin. She kept coming to church but remained in despair for several months. Then she heard Mr. Spurgeon preach [and] she trusted Jesus and His atoning blood, and rejoiced. She trusted Jesus alone, and was saved.

Of a second young woman it was said,

She came to hear Mr. Spurgeon preach out of curiosity. She left the church in fear. She said, “I wish I had never gone to hear him preach. I determined never go to again. But I felt miserable if I stayed away. I was miserable if I came to hear him preach, and I was miserable if I stayed away. At last I trusted Christ and in Him I found peace and comfort. I did not find Christ until I gave up seeking peace in anything else but Jesus. I tried everything else first. But nothing else gave me peace until I found Christ and His all-saving Blood.”

Redeemed! Sing the chorus with me!

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.
   (“Redeemed” by Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915).

Sing it again!

Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

The Blood of Jesus that redeems us is no ordinary Blood. In Acts 20:28 we learn how great the Blood of Jesus is. Paul said to the elders of the Ephesian church,

“Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

Do you think the King James Bible translated it wrong? Then listen to the New International translation,

“Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”

Perhaps you are still not convinced. So I will give you the New American Standard translation,

“Shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

Clearly we see that the Blood of Jesus, which can cleanse you from sin, is no ordinary Blood. We are redeemed from sin by the “Blood of God.” Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity – God the Son. God incarnate. God in human flesh. So it is perfectly correct to call His Blood the “Blood of God.” That is why great Spurgeon said, “There are no sins which the blood of Christ cannot wash away.” Charles Wesley said it well,

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
   He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
   His blood availed for me.
(“O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” by Charles Wesley, 1707-1888;
      to the tune of “O Set Ye Open Unto Me”).

Sing it!

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
   He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
   His blood availed for me.

Do you think you have no sin? I doubt that you are as clean as Charles Wesley was before he was saved. He fasted several meals a week. Do you? He prayed for hours on end. Do you? He even went as a missionary to the American Indians. Would you? He would not admit he was a sinner in his heart. He was like the girl in Spurgeon’s church who said,

I tried everything else first. I did not find Christ until I gave up seeking peace in anything else but Jesus. I tried everything else first. But nothing else gave me peace until I [trusted Jesus] and His all-saving Blood.

Haven’t you done that? You have tried everything else. But it hasn’t given you peace – has it? Has it? Of course not! And you will never have peace. Never have peace! Never have peace! You will never ever have peace until you stop everything else and admit to Jesus that you need His all-saving Blood!

Of the other young woman it was said,

She kept coming to church but remained in despair for several months. Then she heard Mr. Spurgeon preach [and finally] trusted Jesus and His atoning Blood, and rejoiced. She trusted Jesus alone, and was saved.

I did not find Christ until I gave up seeking peace in anything else but Jesus. I tried everything else first. But nothing else gave me peace until I found Christ and His all-saving Blood.

The Bible says,

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”

Then John Samuel Cagan said, “His Blood will atone for your sin. Throw yourself on His mercy. He alone can redeem you from your sin by His Blood. I pray that you will trust Jesus today.”

“He is despised and rejected of men... and we hid...our faces from him. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities...and with his [wounds] we are healed” (Isaiah 53:3, 5).

“Without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22). But thank God “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1:7). Oh, tonight, may the words of Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) be your words. She said,

Just as I am, without one plea
   But that Thy blood was shed for me;
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee,
   O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

At fifteen years old, John Samuel Cagan said,

I could not find any form of peace...I could not stop feeling so tormented...I was so tired of struggling, I was so tired of everything I was...I was trying to get saved. I was trying to trust Christ and I couldn’t. I just could not will myself to Christ. I could not decide to become a Christian, and it made me feel so hopeless...Jesus had given His life for me. Jesus went to be crucified for me...This thought broke me. I had to let it all go...I had to have Jesus. In that moment I yielded to Him and came to Him by faith...with my heart, with a simple resting in Christ He saved me! He washed my sin away in His Blood!...I did not need a feeling. I had Christ! Yet in trusting Christ it felt as if my sin was lifted off my soul. I turned from my sin, and I looked to Jesus alone! Jesus saved me...my faith rests in Jesus, for He has changed me...He gave me life and peace...Christ came to me, and for this I will not leave Him... He washed my sin away in His Blood.

Just as I am, without one plea
   But that Thy blood was shed for me;
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee,
   O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Just as I am, and waiting not
   To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose Blood can cleanse each spot,
   O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
   Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve,
Because Thy promise I believe,
   O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

To Thee whose Blood can cleanse each spot,
   O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Will you come to Jesus and be cleansed from all your sin by His precious Blood? If you will come to Jesus we are waiting to pray for you. As the others go upstairs, please come and sit in the first two rows. Amen.
