Print Sermon

The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.

These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. Please click here to learn how you can make a monthly donation to help us in this great work of preaching the Gospel to the whole world.

Whenever you write to Dr. Hymers always tell him what country you live in, or he cannot answer you. Dr. Hymers’ e-mail is rlhymersjr@sbcglobal.net.

SEVEN POINTS FOR NEW CONVERTS

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Saturday Evening, October 7, 2017

“Confirming [strengthening] the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God”
     (Acts 14:22).

The Applied New Testament Commentary says this about that verse,

It is not enough to preach the Gospel in a place only once. It is necessary also to teach the new believers and to establish them in their faith. And this is what Paul and Barnabas did. They warned the new disciples that to enter the kingdom of God they would have to endure many hardships [pressures, sufferings].

The Apostle Paul said, “If we suffer [endure], we shall also reign with him” (II Timothy 2:12). This means that a truly committed Christian must endure the pressures of the Christian life to reign with Christ in His coming Kingdom. “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (II Timothy 2:3).

I. First, you must suffer some hardship.

That is the first thing you must know. You don’t just get saved to go to Heaven. After you are saved, “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ…If we suffer, we shall also reign with him” (II Timothy 2:3, 12). I was not taught this before I went to the Chinese church. I thought you just trusted Christ and then went to Heaven. Dr. Timothy Lin taught me that I must be an overcoming Christian to reign with Christ in His Kingdom, “He that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations” (Revelation 2:26). The Christians in the Muslim world and in China know they must go through hardships to reign with Christ in His Kingdom. As our opening text says, “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). The Apostle Paul taught the new Christians that they would have to go through many trials (thlipsis – pressures) to reign with Christ in His coming Kingdom. And that is what you must do if you were converted in this revival. Dr. Watts’ famous hymn has taught that in our hymnals for nearly three hundred years!

Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize, And sailed through bloody seas?
Sure I must fight, if I would reign, Increase my courage, Lord,
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy Word.
(“Am I a Soldier of the Cross?” by Dr. Isaac Watts, 1674-1748).

II. Second, you must have a Bible and read it.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (II Timothy 3:16, 17).

You need to buy a Scofield Study Bible so you can follow along as we give you the page number. You need to take the printed manuscripts of these sermons home with you and study them during the week. Do not listen to any radio or TV preachers. Many of them are false teachers. Don’t listen to any of them except Dr. J. Vernon McGee. You can listen to his daily Bible studies any time of the day or night on your computer at www.ttb.org or www.thrutheBible.org. Dr. McGee was the long-time pastor of the Church of the Open Door, at 550 South Hope Street, here in downtown Los Angeles. I learned the Bible by listening to him every day. He avoids nearly all of the errors and heresies of today. He is the only Bible teacher on radio or television that I trust – the only one. We have had people get messed up by listening to the one that comes on before or after Dr. McGee on the radio. That’s why it’s best to listen to him on your computer. (all non-English language translations can be found at www.ttb.org/global-reach/regions-languages).

Read the Bible every day. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).

III. Third, don’t go to other churches except when you are on vacation.

We are living in a time of deep apostasy in the churches. Stay away from them.

“And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:11, 12).

We cannot recommend other churches. Even Baptist churches often promote “Decisionism” and other heresies.

IV. Fourth, attend this church every Sunday morning and Sunday evening. Also attend our Thursday night prayer meeting and evangelism every week.

V. Fifth, get to know the pastor and the associate pastor.

You can phone Dr. Hymers and ask him questions any time – or see him here at church.

“Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation” (Hebrews 13:7).

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:17).

The words “rule over you” can be translated “your leaders.” The Reformation Study Bible says of Hebrews 13:17, “Faithful church leaders are faithful shepherds…The leaders’ (pastors) care is deep and genuine because they are appointed by God and will give an account to Him. Everyone will suffer if their ministry is resisted.” The pastor is Dr. Hymers. You can phone him at (818)352-0452. The associate pastor is Dr. Cagan. You can phone him at (323)735-3320.

VI. Sixth, make soul winning a strong priority in your life.

No one can be a good Christian without working hard to bring in people to hear the Gospel. Jesus said, “Compel them to come in, that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23).

VII. Seventh, get into one of the small prayer groups.

Ask Mrs. Hymers or Dr. Cagan to help you find one that is best for you. Meet with your prayer group every week.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).

If you are not yet saved, we urge you to repent of sin and trust Jesus Christ. When you repent and trust Him, His Blood cleanses you from all sin.

“The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1: 7).

Please see Dr. Cagan and let him hear your testimony if you think you are saved. His phone number is (323)735-3320.

Amen.
