That is the fifth commandment. It is repeated in the New Testament,

“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-3).

Last Friday a twenty-four year old boy named James Holmes went to a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado armed with a combat level arsenal. He set off two gas canisters and sprayed the people in the theater with gunfire. At least 12 people were killed and 59 others were wounded. Witnesses described the gunman calmly shooting people throughout the theater at random, hitting men, women and children as the latest Batman movie played on the screen. The movie was titled, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Why did this boy, James Holmes, go on a rampage and kill all those people? He came into the theater dressed in dark, head-to-foot body armor, including a helmet, gas mask, vest and throat guard, and he was armed to the teeth – ready to kill as many people as possible. What could drive a boy like this to become a mass murderer? The liberals will say it was because we need gun control. But guns don’t kill people unless there is a human being to pull the trigger. A pencil cannot write by itself. Take away the guns, and a maniac will make pipe bombs or use dynamite, or they will set the building on fire. No, there was something else that made James Holmes into a monster. Have we forgotten that Satan exists? Have we forgotten that the world of demons is portrayed as a stark reality in the Bible? Today people mock the idea that “the Devil made me do it.” But their smug laughter does not erase the fact that the Bible says, “the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8).

Whatever others may say, I am old fashioned enough to believe that the Devil did make James Holmes into a murderous monster. But how did that happen to this young man?

My wife looked at a photograph of him in the newspaper and said two words, “video games.” She is undoubtedly right. Video games numb the mind and cause a person to see life as a game. That’s why, in my opinion, so many young people drive wildly on our freeways. Yes, hundreds of hours of video games become an idol that enslaves the mind and opens it to Satanic forces.

Did James Holmes also use drugs? In all likelihood he did. And make no mistake, drugs open the mind and heart to demonic powers. Drugs are nothing to be played with. If the politicians want to stop incidents like this from happening they need to seal the borders so the drug cartels can’t send billions of dollars worth of drugs into our country to dope our young people and make them slaves of Satan! Stopping the drug traffic would do a thousand times more good than any gun control measures they could pass. Doesn’t common sense tell you that it’s drugs and video games that are ruining our young people, not guns? Or have we become so crazy that we can’t see that? Maybe we have. Maybe we have.

Also, we should remember what kind of country James Holmes grew up in. It was not the same country I lived in as a boy! Not at all! I was 21 years old when the godless Supreme Court banned prayer in our public schools in December, 1962. When I was a boy we prayed in school and nobody objected. Then in June, 1963 that same godless court banned Bible reading in our schools. Five months later, in November, 1963 President John F. Kennedy was shot through the head in Dallas, Texas – and a whole new era of crime and bloodshed began. About two and a half years later Charles Whitman took an assault rifle and climbed the clock tower of the University of Texas and shot 16 people at random, paving the way for Timothy McVeigh, James Holmes and many others, who began to kill at random, which never happened when I was a boy. I have always thought that God took His hand off of America when they banned prayer and Bible reading in our schools. I think God said, “You have abandoned me, so I will abandon you.” God said to the nation through the prophet Hosea, “Thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help” (Hosea 13:9).

Then in 1964 President Johnson lied to the American people, and said if he was re-elected he would withdraw our boys from Vietnam. But he lied. The very next year he sent a half million kids into the jungles to fight a no-win war, without attacking the Communists in the North. Hundreds of thousands of young men lost their youth and their hopes in those steaming jungles, with no hope of ever winning because our government would not let them win. Because of Johnson’s wickedness millions of young people in America went wild, protesting the war and numbing their minds with psychedelic drugs and marijuana, drugs that we never knew of when I was growing up. At Woodstock, in the summer of 1969, these hopeless youth stripped off their clothes, and ran naked through the mud, their minds controlled by drugs and demons. The last casualty of Johnson’s war in Vietnam was poor Richard Nixon, who was hounded out of office by the very same wicked people who started the war in the first place. Then, in January, 1973 the godless Supreme Court passed Roe v. Wade, which made the murder of pre-born children the law of our land. Since then 1 1/2 million American babies have been slaughtered every year by the blood-drenched abortionist doctors. Since that awful day in 1973, 55 million American babies have had their arms and legs torn out of their sockets, screaming in their mothers’ wombs as they were gouged and torn by the Nazi-like maniacs that called themselves “doctors.” God help us – a nation drenched in blood!

Then, too, the movies became pornographic for the first time in the early 1970s. And they became bloodier and bloodier and bloodier and bloodier, as America slid in pagan rejection of God and the Bible. America had become a nation of blood-soaked hedonists, and demon possessed drug addicts! THAT IS THE AMERICA INTO WHICH JAMES HOLMES WAS BORN! Is it any wonder, then, that he went mad, and shot everything that moved in that theater that was showing the Satanic movie “The Dark Knight Rises”? No! It is no wonder! The only wonder is that this doesn’t happen even more often than it does!

Young people, this is the America you were born in, and raised in. If you have a Christian home, you ought to thank God for it! Thank God for your home and for your Christian father and mother. They shelter you from the stormy blasts of Satan. They protect you from a nation and a culture that has gone mad!

And if you do not thank God for Christian parents, if you long to be free from them so you can go out into the howling vortex of a nation gone mad, do not expect God to protect you and bless you! Oh no! If you rebel against your parents and go out into a life of sin, please remember that God will not bless you, and He will not protect you. “Then entered Satan into Judas” (Luke 22:3) and he “went immediately out: and it was night” (John 13:30). And you know what happened to Judas! Beware of Satan’s temptations and lies! Turn, and weep, and seek forgiveness from Jesus for rebelling against your father and mother! Be washed clean from your sin by the Blood of Jesus – before it is too late. Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).  Come to Jesus and He will save you now!
