OBAMA’S WAR ON ISRAEL

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Evening, May 29, 2011

“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3).

In a short sermon it is difficult to give all the facts concerning last Friday’s (May 20, 2011) confrontation between President Obama and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. It started out when President Obama released a statement the day before he met with Mr. Netanyahu. In that statement, Obama said that Israel should give the Palestinians and their terrorist allies all the land that Israel had won in 1967, in the Six Day War. It was a statement that was shocking for two reasons: (1) first, no other U.S. president had ever called on Israel to give up so much land to their enemies; (2) second, it was without precedent for a U.S. president to make such a statement before meeting with a prime minister of Israel. Dick Morris called the grim confrontation between the two leaders the beginning of “Obama’s war on Israel.”

OneNewsNow reported (5/23/11) that “Thousands of pro-Israel activists [were addressed by Obama] Sunday in which he [repeated] his comments made earlier in the week about Israel returning to the pre-1967 borders.” Among those attending was Laurie Cardoza-Moore, who said that “While Obama claims to support Israel, many of the participants are guarded and uncertain if they can trust what the president said as he attempted to clarify his Thursday comments” (ibid.).

Attorney Jordan Sekulow, a national defense analyst, says President Obama has revealed an anti-Israel bias, despite attempts to explain it away. Sekulow said, “You had a Democrat congressman from New Jersey, Robert Andrews – not a moderate, a liberal – saying that Obama is tilting [leaning] toward Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization.”

In a poll conducted by OneNewsNow, more than 93%, when asked how they would describe the President’s attitude toward Israel, answered “hostile, anti-Israel” (Chad Groening, “Obama’s Schizophrenic Policy,” OneNewsNow, 5/27/11).

Liberal Time Magazine, in an all-out attack on Prime Minister Netanyahu, called him “boorish,” “provocative,” “cheesy,” and “condescending” for defending the borders of his country (Time, June 6, 2011, p. 25). But Governor Mitt Romney said, “Obama has thrown Israel under the bus” (ibid.).

News commentator Dick Morris, himself a Jew, went even farther. In an article titled “Obama’s War on Israel,” Morris said,

No American Jew who values the existence of the nation of Israel can kid himself any longer. President Obama is against the Jewish state. His speech on Thursday overtly embraces the position of the Palestinians and is designed to force Israel to surrender to their domination.
How else are we to interpret a demand that Israel return to its 1967 borders and that this be the starting point for further negotiations?...The 1967 borders can be walked easily in four hours and driven in less than fifteen minutes. A jet would take one minute to overfly it.
To force Israel into indefensible borders is not a prelude to a solution. It is the prelude to a modern equivalent of [Hitler’s] Final Solution – the destruction of Israel and of the seven million Jews who live there.
Who can pretend that shrinking Israel would appease the Arabs any more than dismembering Czechoslovakia appeased Hitler?...Short of...driving out the Jews who have lived there for more than sixty years – there is no compromise that they will accept...
The consequences for Jewish Democrats of Obama’s remarks are profound. They must each now choose, bluntly and without room for equivocation, between their support for Obama and their backing of Israel. It is not Israel or the Republican Party that has forced this choice upon them. It is the President himself whose anti-Israel bias has never been more blatantly on display.
As President Obama solicits funds from American Jews, let us all remember our family, friends, and compatriots in Israel and honor them by saying no. It is time for American Jews to choose. Just like it was in 1938 (DickMorris.com, “Obama’s War on Israel,” May 23, 2011).

While I do not always agree with Dick Morris, I think he is right on this. It is time for all Americans to choose – to choose to stand up for Israel and say, “Never again” to those terrorists who are seeking to exterminate the Jews. Never again! Let us send the President telegrams and make phone calls to the White House. Let us tell him that we want him to back away from what he has said, and give his full support to our ally and friend, the State of Israel, and to Jewish people everywhere!

And let us thank God that Prime Minister Netanyahu stood up to Mr. Obama.  The Los Angeles Times said,

Admonishing a president of the United States on international television, Netanyahu rejected the plan outlined by Obama that would use the borders before the 1967...war as the starting point for negotiations, saying that doing so would risk Israel’s security and force it to negotiate with “a Palestinian version of Al Qaeda.”
“The only peace that will endure is one based on reality, on unshakable facts,” Netanyahu said, leaning intently toward a grim Obama (Los Angeles Times, Saturday, May 21, 2011, p. A1).

Good! Thank you Prime Minister Netanyahu! Thank you for standing firm for Israel. God bless you! You are our hero and our friend! We pray for you. We “pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee” (Psalm 122:6).

Now, why do we, as Bible-believing Christians, so strongly support Israel, and the Jewish people in general? Some may think that we have an ulterior motive – that we really support Israel because we want to convert the Jews. That is not true. Yes, we share the Gospel of Christ with everyone, both Jews and Gentiles.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

We are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. We will share it with anyone who wants to listen.

But the true reason we support Israel and the Jews is because the Bible tells us to do so.  The Apostle Paul said, “they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes” (Romans 11:28). Thus, we love Israel and the Jewish people whether or not they believe in Jesus. Even if they reject Jesus, we love them and support them. “They are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.” None of us would know God if it were not for those Jewish forefathers. Jesus Himself said, “Salvation is [from] the Jews” (John 4:22). We would not know about God if it were not for the Jews. We would not have the Bible if it were not for the Jews. All the books of the Bible – both the Old and New Testaments – were written by the hands of Jews. Our Messiah, Jesus, is a Jew. Those are some of the reasons we love Israel and the Jewish people, whether or not they believe in Jesus. God knows that is true. “They are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.”

Way back in Genesis 12:1-3 we read about God’s covenant with Abraham, our forefather in the faith.

“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3).

God called Abraham to the land we now call Israel. God called him to go “unto a land that I will shew thee.” God gave the land of Israel to Abraham and his seed, Isaac and Jacob, over 2,000 years before Christ.  The Jews are not the invaders.  The land belongs to them!  God said so four thousand years ago. Then, God said that He would make of Abraham a great nation, and that He would bless the world through his descendants. This God has done, as I have showed – by giving us the Bible, the faith, and the Messiah. But, then, notice Genesis 12:3,

“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:3).

God said there would be a blessing on any nation that blessed the Jews, the seed of Abraham. And, also, God said there would be a curse on any nation that cursed the Jews. This has been remarkably fulfilled throughout the generations of time. Egypt cursed the Jews and fell into ruin. Babylonia cursed the Jews and fell into ruin. So did Rome. So did Spain. So did Russia. So did Germany. From the time of Egypt until modern times, every civilization that has cursed the Jews has been cursed by God.

One of the reasons America has been so blessed of God, in spite of our many national sins, is that the United States, until now, has blessed the Jewish people, and supported their God-given homeland of Israel.

But if President Obama should turn away from Israel, and stab her in the back, and support her enemies, what an awful curse may descend on America as a nation! We could quickly fall under the judgment of God, as Nazi Germany did, or as did ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Rome, Spain, and Russia. Let us pray that God Himself will turn our President’s heart. Let us pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and the prosperity of Israel. Amen.

We make no apology for believing in Jesus. He died on the Cross to pay for the sins of mankind. He shed His precious Blood to cleanse us from all sin. He rose physically from the dead to give us the new birth and eternal life. How I pray tonight that someone reading this sermon will come to Jesus by faith, and be saved by Him for all time and for all eternity. Amen.

Last night I lay a sleeping, There came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem Beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing, And ever as they sang,
   I thought the voice of angels From Heaven in answer rang;
I thought the voice of angels From Heaven in answer rang: —
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King!”

And then I thought my dream was changed, The streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad hosannas The little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery, The morn was cold and chill,
As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill,
As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill.
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Hark! how the angels sing,
Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King.”

And once again the scene was changed, New earth there seemed to be,
   I saw the Holy City Beside the tideless sea;
The light of God was on its streets, The gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter, And no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night, Or sun to shine by day,
It was the new Jerusalem, That would not pass away,
It was the new Jerusalem, That would not pass away.
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing, for the night is o’er!
Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna for evermore!
Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna for evermore!”

OBAMA’S WAR ON ISRAEL

by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

No American Jew who values the existence of the nation of Israel can kid himself any longer. President Obama is against the Jewish state. His speech on Thursday overtly embraces the position of the Palestinians and is designed to force Israel to surrender to their domination.

How else are we to interpret a demand that Israel return to its 1967 borders and that this be the starting point for further negotiations? The 1967 borders include a waist line across the middle of Israel that is all of twelve miles in length. It can be walked easily in four hours and driven in less than fifteen minutes. A jet would take one minute to overfly it.

To force Israel into indefensible borders is not a prelude to a solution. It is the prelude to a modern equivalent of the Final Solution – the destruction of Israel and of the seven million Jews who live there.

Who can pretend that shrinking Israel would appease the Arabs any more than dismembering Czechoslovakia appeased Hitler? The Palestinians, long kept seething with grievances by the United Nations refugee agency, Hamas, and the PA, want the right of return. They demonstrated this just last week as they approached Israel’s borders demanding admission. Short of having their farms and homes back – and driving out the Jews who have lived there for more than sixty years – there is no compromise that they will accept.

And what is the backdrop for Obama’s embrace of the essential Palestinian demand? It takes place a few weeks after the merger of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, committing both to the destruction of Israel. This is the entity Obama wants Israel to trust twelve miles from the sea!

If the last few months of revolutions in the Arab world have demonstrated anything, it is that the Arab street is more concerned with its own economic well being and in getting out from under the despotism of their regimes than about the plight of the Palestinians.

The consequences for Jewish Democrats of Obama’s remarks are profound. They must each now choose, bluntly and without room for equivocation between their support for Obama and their backing for Israel. It is not Israel or the Republican Party that has forced this choice upon them. It is the President himself whose anti-Israel bias has never been more blatantly on display.

As President Obama solicits funds from American Jews, let us all remember our family, friends, and compatriots in Israel and honor them by saying no. It is the time for American Jews to choose. Just like it was in 1938.
