The Hebrew word translated “fool” is “nabal.” There was actually a man named Nabal, who withstood David. His own wife said of him,

“…as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him” (I Samuel 25:25).

Nabal means fool, and the way this man acted indicates that his name was appropriate! Concerning our text, Dr. John Gill (1697-1771) said,

“not such as are idiots…but such as are fools in their morals, without understanding in spiritual things…alienated from the life of God; and whose hearts are full of blindness…these endeavour to work themselves into such a belief [that] there is no God” (John Gill, D.D., An Exposition of the Old Testament, The Baptist Standard Bearer, 1989 reprint, vol. III, p. 577; note on Psalm 14:1).

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

The Bible gives several reasons for calling atheists “fools.”

I. First, they are called fools because the creation speaks clearly of a Creator.

The word “fool” does not mean that they are mentally retarded, but that they are blind spiritually, as Dr. Gill pointed out. They may be very intelligent in the things of the world, yet they are utterly blind, even to the revelation of God in nature. Please stand and read aloud Romans 1:20.

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

“The things that are made” is one word in Greek, “poiema.” This word is translated in Ephesians 2:10 as “workmanship.” The created universe, thus, testifies to the “eternal power” of God who “made” it, and who sustains it now that it has been created.

God’s “eternal power” is shown in physics in the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. The First Law of Thermodynamics says that, in a closed system, such as the universe, the total amount of energy neither increases nor decreases. Isaac Asimov said, “Energy can be transferred from one place to another, or transformed from one form to another, but it can neither be created nor destroyed” (Isaac Asimov, “In the Game of Energy and Thermodynamics, You Can’t Even Break Even,” Smithsonian, June, 1970, p. 6). So, where did energy come from in the first place? Ben Stein, in his documentary, Expelled, asked Dr. Richard Dawkins, the famous atheistic biologist, that very question, “How did [the universe] get created?” Dawkins answered, “Nobody knows how it got started.” But he is wrong. Dr. Antony Flew of Oxford University, long considered the world’s leading atheist, has changed his mind. Dr. Flew said, “Scientific evidence has now convinced him that a super-intelligence is the only explanation for the origin of life and the complexity of nature” (Associated Press, December 10, 2004).

Thus, according to Dr. Antony Flew, the First Law of Thermodynamics points to a Creator. But isn’t that what the Bible said all along? The very first sentence of the Bible says,

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”
       (Genesis 1:1).

Thus, the First Law of Thermodynamics points to a Creator, just as the Bible has said for centuries!

The Second Law of Thermodynamics also points to a Creator. Because this law of science says that the entire universe is running down, it must have had a beginning. And that beginning points to the Creator! Dr. Henry M. Morris (1918-2006) said,

Since nothing is now being created, the universe could not have created itself by the natural processes which now function in it. Yet, since it is now disintegrating and dying, it must have been created at some finite time in the past…If it must have been created, yet could not have been created by the… power in its existing processes, it must have been created by the eternal power of a transcendent Creator. The Creation, therefore, eloquently testifies to the eternal power of its Creator (Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., The Defender’s Study Bible, World Publishers, 1995, p. 1230; note on Romans 1:20).

Thus, both the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics in science point to a Creator,

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

And, therefore,

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

Sing, “How Great Thou Art”!

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder

   Thy power throughout the universe displayed,
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee;
   How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee;

And yet,

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

II. Second, they are called fools because their heart is darkened.

Please stand and read Romans 1:21-22.

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22).

The text says,

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

It was not the mind, but the heart of man, that was darkened by sin.

When the first man sinned he brought the darkness of spiritual death to all his descendants,

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Thus, the Bible describes the human race as,

“Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart” (Ephesians 4:18).

“The blindness of their heart” describes how sin has darkened man’s understanding of God. That is the real reason why,

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

III. Third, they are called fools because they turn from the truth to fables.

Turn to II Timothy 4:3-4. Please stand and read it aloud,

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (II Timothy 4:3-4).

This is a prophecy we see being fulfilled, in part, today as people follow atheistic scientists and are “turned unto fables” (II Timothy 4:4b). The word “fables” here translates the Greek word “muthos,” from which comes our English word “myth.” Modern Darwinists and other atheistic “naturalists” turn to various “fables” or “myths” to explain the origin of life. Listen again to the conversation between Ben Stein and Dr. Richard Dawkins, the atheist biologist. Ben Stein asked Dawkins how life started. Dawkins answered,

Well, it could [have] come about in the following way…it could be that at some earlier time, somewhere in the universe a civilization evolved by probably some kind of Darwinian means to a very, very high level of technology and designed a form of life that they seeded onto, perhaps this planet (Expelled, ibid.).

Stein said, “You don’t believe in any god, anywhere?” Dawkins answered, “No.” (Click here to order a DVD of “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.”)

So, there you have it! According to this world-famous atheistic biologist there is no possibility of God creating life. And yet he said that it is possible that little men from another planet brought life to earth on a spaceship! You heard it! You heard him say it! Dawkins said there is no possibility that God created life, but life may have been “seeded” to this earth by men from outer space! What is that but outlandish science fiction?

“They shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [myths]” (II Timothy 4:4).

Away with Dawkins’ science fiction! Away with the myths of atheistic Darwinism! Sing “How Great Thou Art.”

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder

IV. Fourth, men can only be changed from atheistic fools by the grace of God Himself!

Turn to Mark 10:26-27. Please stand and read both verses aloud.

“And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:26-27).

“Who then can be saved?”

“With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

It is humanly impossible for a person to be saved. Only God can do that. If God does not change your heart, you will never be saved. You will always remain lost in spiritual darkness. To be saved,

“The eyes of your understanding [must be] enlightened”
       (Ephesians 1:18).

The enlightening of your understanding comes from the entrance of the Word of God,

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130).

The usual way that God’s Word enlightens darkened hearts is through preaching, for

“How shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14).

That is why it is so very important for you to be in church every Sunday. It would be even safer to come to church twice on Sunday – morning and evening. You need to hear the preaching of God’s Word as much as possible. If God does not open your heart through the preaching of His Word, you will remain a lost soul. You will end up in eternal darkness, cast

“into the fire that never shall be quenched” (Mark 9:43).

Therefore I urge you to be in these services every Sunday morning and every Sunday night. Your life and the destiny of your soul depend on God converting you, for

“Except ye be converted…ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).

Yes, you need to be in church every Sunday morning and every Sunday evening to hear the preaching of the Gospel; to hear the great truths concerning Christ’s atoning sacrifice for your sins on the Cross; to hear the great truths concerning Christ’s resurrection and glorious ascension to the right hand of the Father; to hear the great truths concerning saving faith in Christ, regeneration and sanctification. So, whatever else you do, I urge you in the strongest possible way to come to church twice every Sunday, and hear the Gospel, and respond to Christ, and be born again! May God move you, and enlighten you, and draw you to Christ, for cleansing from sin by His precious Blood! Amen.
