The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.
These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission.

A sermon preached on Lord's Day Morning, January 30, 2005 "Without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22). |
The word "remission" is from the Greek word which means "freedom, liberty, deliverance, sending away" (Strong). The Blood of Jesus can bring you remission, that is, freedom from sin and Hell. It can bring liberty from the guilt of sin, deliverance from the penalty of sin. It can "send sin away" and blot your sin out, so God can no longer see it, when Christ's Blood washes your sins out of His record book in Heaven. But our text tells us "without shedding of blood is no remission," no freedom from sin, no liberty from the guilt of sin, no deliverance from punishment for sin. Sin can never be "sent away" without the Blood of Jesus Christ.
So, you can never be delivered from sin, freed from sin, at liberty to live without the guilt of sin, unless you have the Blood of Jesus Christ. Your sin can never be "sent away" or blotted out of God's record without the Blood of Jesus Christ.
"Without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22).
Now look at the word "shedding." The Greek word from which "shedding" is translated is "haimatekchusia." It means "an effusion, or pouring forth, of blood" (Strong). It comes from "ekchēō," which means "to pour forth, to give out, spill" (Strong), and "haima," which means "blood." So the word "shedding" means "pouring out blood."
Without the pouring forth, the gushing out, the spilling, of Christ's Blood there is no remission, no freedom from sin, no liberty from a guilty record, no deliverance from God's death sentence on sin, no blotting out of sin from God's great books, which record your every sin. There is no salvation at all without the pouring out of Christ's Blood to cleanse your soul and remove the record of your sins in God's ledger book. In fact, Jesus cannot save you without His Blood, for without the Blood there is no freedom from guilt, no deliverance from its penalty, no liberty from the wrath of God, no cleansing of sin.
"Without shedding of blood is no remission [no cleansing from sin]" (Hebrews 9:22).
I. First, Dr. MacArthur is wrong on this subject.
I like much that he writes. I read his notes in The MacArthur Study Bible every day. But he is wrong on this critical subject. For instance, Dr. MacArthur says,
It was not Jesus' physical blood that saved us, but his dying on our behalf (The MacArthur New Testament Commentary on Hebrews, p. 237).
He says, "Blood is used as a substitute [word] for death" (The MacArthur Study Bible, note on Hebrews 9:14). He says, "Christ's physical blood does not save us" (ibid., The MacArthur New Testament Commentary on Hebrews). He says, "NT [New Testament] references to the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ are references to his death" (The MacArthur Study Bible, p. 178).
These statements are dangerously false. Jesus' physical Blood does save us. The Blood of Jesus is not used as a substitute word for His death. And he is wrong when he says that "[New Testament] references to the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ are references to his death." They are no such thing! Most New Testament references to His Blood are New Testament references to His Blood. What could be clearer to the unblinded eye? Every time we take the Lord's Supper we use the bread and the cup, the bread showing the death of His body, and the cup showing forth His Blood. The cup and the bread show that the death of Jesus and the Blood are two distinct elements. Every child watching the celebration of the Lord's Supper knows they are two different things. MacArthur says, "Blood is used as a substitute for death" (The MacArthur Study Bible, note on Hebrews 9:14). Hasn't he ever thought about the Lord's Supper, which shows so graphically that they are two distinct things?
Now I submit one more question to Dr. MacArthur. If he is right and "Blood is used as a substitute for death" how can our text be true,
"Without shedding of blood is no remission"? (Hebrews 9:22).
How can the death of Christ be poured out, gushing out, washing away sin? The death of Christ did not pour out, or gush out of Him. The death of Christ was not "shed" from Him. It was the Blood of Christ that was shed, that poured out for our cleansing! That's what "shedding" means in Greek - "pouring out, gushing out." His death didn't do that. But His Blood did do that. And thank God, as D. L. Moody said, "The Bible sheds a great deal of light on the commentaries" - including Dr. MacArthur's commentaries on this subject!
"Without shedding [pouring out] of blood is no remission [no cleansing from sin]" (Hebrews 9:22).
II. Second, this is no small point.
It strikes at the very heart of the Lord's Supper. It strikes at the very heart of the gospel. It strikes at the very heart of the salvation of a human soul. Dr. MacArthur's position is reminiscent of the dry, bloodless "gospel" of Harry Emerson Fosdick, Nels Ferré, and other liberals of the past. It is liberalism masquerading as conservatism. It is not the faith of our fathers. It is not the faith of historic Christianity and Scripture.
C. H. Spurgeon answered Dr. MacArthur's false teaching on this subject when he said,
Jesus Christ himself cannot save us, apart from his blood… Not so; not the holiness of Jesus, not the life of Jesus, not the death of Jesus, but the blood of Jesus only; "for without the shedding [pouring out] of blood there is no remission" (C. H. Spurgeon, "The Unalterable Law," The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, Pilgrim Publications, 1979 reprint, volume LX, p. 378, emphasis mine).
There, Spurgeon made it clear as can be -"Not the death of Jesus, but the blood of Jesus only" can cleanse us from our sins. Let those who reject Spurgeon's words fear lest they lose their souls by believing in the death of Christ mentally, while they remain lost, having failed to obtain propitiation for their sins "through faith in his blood" (Romans 3:25).
"Without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22).
III. Third, without the Blood of Christ you are
still unclean in the sight of God.
Not only can you receive the "propitiation" of God's wrath "through faith in his blood" (Romans 3:25). You can also be cleansed from sin by His Blood. We are told this many times in the Scriptures. In Leviticus we are told,
"It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul"
(Leviticus 17:11).
In Matthew, the Lord Jesus said,
"For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed [poured out] for many for the remission [sending away, cleansing] of sins" (Matthew 26:28).
In the Book of Revelation we are told of
"Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood" (Revelation 1:5).
"Washed us from our sins in his own blood." What could be plainer than that? And the Apostle John tells us that
"the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin"
(I John 1:7).
What could be clearer than that?
Away with a bloodless "Christ"! This Christ will do you no good. This bloodless being cannot give you remission, cannot free you from sin, cannot send sin away, or blot sin out of God's record and cleanse you from it. This monstrous, bloodless Christ is a "false Christ," one of the "false Christs" Jesus predicted in Matthew 24,
"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets…that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect"
(Matthew 24:24).
A Christ without Blood is a very terrible "false Christ." Do not believe in Satan's substitute for the real Christ, who came
"from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah, [with] garments like him that treadeth in the winefat" (Isaiah 63:1-2).
And when the true Christ comes again, He will yet be "clothed with a vesture dipped in blood" (Revelation 19:13). His very clothing itself will witness the great fact that
"without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22).
Without the Blood of Christ you are still unclean in the sight of God. Let us learn anew the great hymn of Joseph Hart, who said,
See the suffering Son of God,
Panting, groaning, sweating blood!
Boundless depths of grace divine!
Jesus, what a love was thine!
("Thine Unknown Sufferings" by Joseph Hart, 1712-1768,
to the tune of "'Tis Midnight, And on Olive's Brow")
Without the Blood of Christ you are still unclean in the sight of God, for
"without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22).
You have sins recorded in God's books. God will read those sins at the Last Judgment. Your name will be called. You will be brought before the awful throne of God. The book with your name in it will be placed in front of God. God will read your name out loud, and then He will read lists of your every sin.
"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened…and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works" (Revelation 20:12).
Your greatest need is not a physical need. Your greatest need is not a psychological need. Your greatest need is a legal need. You are guilty in God's books. Nothing you do can get your record changed - in God's books. Nothing you feel can get your record changed - in God's books.
"How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?" (Job 25:4).
There is only one way that your sins can be blotted out of God's books - and that is by the Blood of Christ.
"Without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22).
If you would like to speak with me about the Blood of Christ cleansing your sin from God's record, please step to the back of the room after we sing the first stanza of the last hymn on your song sheet. We will then go up to my office where we can discuss your need for cleansing with the Blood of Christ. Let us stand and sing that hymn together.
O set ye open unto me the gates of righteousness,
Then will I enter into rest, and I the Lord will bless.
("O Set Ye Open Unto Me the Gates of Righteousness"
by Joseph Addison, 1672-1719).
