God looks upon you as a person, a human being, not as a mere animal. God created mankind from the dust of the earth, but the creation of man did not end there. God breathed the breath of life into the first man, and defined Adam as a living soul, for which He would send His Son Jesus Christ to die, to atone for our sins (Romans 5:6,8). In this sermon I will show you three reasons you should reject evolution and humanism and that you should accept the Biblical account of creation.

I. First, the Salem witch trials are used as propaganda.

In your secular high school or college, most of you young people are taught that Biblical Christianity is dark, and medieval. You are taught that intelligent people don't believe creation, as taught in the Bible.

Your secular teachers often bring up the "Salem witch trials" to show that Christianity is narrow and wrong. But they do not tell you that the "witch trials" lasted less than a year (1692-1693). They do not tell you that only nineteen people were persecuted by a group of overzealous fanatics who did not represent the main body of Protestants. And they never tell you that the Protestants in the government themselves ordered the end of the trials and the release of all prisoners charged with witchcraft. They also don't tell you that Baptists had nothing to do with the witch trials. Baptists are a separate movement from protestantnism.  In our history of over 600 years, Baptists have never persecuted anyone.

The other thing your secular teachers don't tell you is that only 19 were victims of the witch trials. When you compare this to the over 100 million people who have died at the hands of secular humanism in the 20th century, the bad image of Christians portrayed in the witch trials pales into virtual insignificance.

Dr. Henry Morris of the Institute for Creation Research of San Diego shows the horrible carnage that has come from the secular humanist doctrines that your teachers believe. Dr. Morris says:

Untold damage has been wrought, especially during the [20th century], by this dismal doctrine that man is merely an evolved animal. Racism, economic imperialism, communism, Nazism, sexual promiscuity and perversion, aggressive militarism, infanticide [abortion], genocide and all sorts of evils have been vigorously promoted by one group after another on the grounds that, since they were based on evolution, they were "scientific" and, therefore, bound to prove beneficial in the long run (Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., The Biblical Basis for Modern Science, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1984, p. 403).

What you hear in your secular school is propaganda - one sided arguments - to make you think that Christianity is bad and that Secular Humanism is good. These are twisted lies - and you must be smart enough to untwist them - and believe in the God of Scripture!

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7).

II. Second, the Scopes Trial of 1925 is used as propaganda.

The Scopes Trial of 1925 pitted the secular humanist attorney Clarence Darrow against the Christian statesman William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925). The secular media has portrayed Mr. Bryan as an ignorant fool for defending the Biblical account of creation. But Bryan was no fool. He was the Democratic Party nominee for President three times, in 1896, 1900 and 1908. And history shows that the first man he ran against, William McKinley, did not have the quality of a man like Bryan. President McKinley is hardly remembered today. What did he do? While William Jennings Bryan is discussed in every college classroom in America when the subject of evolution is brought up.

Bryan was the Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1915), when my mother was born. Bryan had the moral courage to resign as Secretary of State rather than back Wilson's administration in sending tens of thousands of our young men to die in World War I, which has been called, "The unfinished war." History shows that this war did not make "the world safe for democracy," as Wilson wrongly said it would.

Bryan's arguments against evolution and in favor of Biblical Creation are solid and convincing - even today. His great speech, "The Bible or Evolution?" is still available in print from Sword of the Lord, P.O. Box 1099, Murfreesboro, Tennessee 37133, for fifty cents. Those of you who have been exposed to the Hollywood movie "Inherit the Wind" - have seen a vicious and vile portrayal of this great man, William Jennings Bryan. You should read his speech, and you will see how wrong Hollywood's version of the Scopes Trial really is. Read Bryan's careful, weighty arguments against evolution for yourself. You can get this book containing his speech in our church bookstore. In that speech, Bryan said:

There never was a time when we needed religion [i.e. Christianity] more than today. We need it in the world; we need it in this country. Look at the sin and crime in our own country...There are [thousands of] college men in our prisons; how much good has education done them? The country spent its money to educate them, but their hearts went wrong, and their hearts took their brains with them. Brains that are trained for the good of the country were turned to the plunder of society and there is no hope unless we can get back to a religion that makes men believe in God and a future life and gives them a sense of responsibility. The world needs Christ (pp. 28-29).

The cold, hedonistic, lonely, meaningless society of our day proves that Bryan was right - and his opponents were wrong. Read the newspaper. One news event after the other shows that our society has gone wrong, and reveals that Bryan was one of the few men in his day with the insight to see that a belief in evolution would produce a world without love, without meaning - without God!

William Jennings Bryan, as he became older, was more of a prophet than a politician. He is one of the greatest American Christians of all time. Throughout the ages, Bryan will be remembered as a prophet who preached for America to come back to the God of the Bible! My grandfather, my mother's father, Lloyd V. Flowers, Sr., believed that - and so do I!

Dr. J. Gresham Machen lived at the same time as Bryan. Dr. Machen was a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary for twenty-three years, and later founded Westminster Theological Seminary in 1929. Dr. Machen said:

Our salvation depends squarely upon history; the Bible contains that history, and unless that history is true the authority of the Bible is gone and we who have put our trust in the Bible are without hope. (J. Gresham Machen, Ph.D., The Virgin Birth of Christ, Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Book House, 1985, p. 385).

All those who reject the message of the Bible have "no hope, and [are] without God in the world" (Ephesians 2:12).

III. The second law of thermodynamics is the third reason you should
reject evolution and believe in Biblical Creation.

Scientist Jeremy Rifkin describes the Second Law of Thermodynamics this way:

The second law, the Entropy Law, states that matter and energy can only be changed in one direction, that is, from usable to unusable, or from available to unavailable, or from order to disorder (Jeremy Rifkin, Entropy: A New World View, New York: Bantam Books, 1980, p. 6).

The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that energy is running out. You put gas in your car, and it slowly runs out of gas. There is never suddenly more gas. There is always less gas. You blow up a balloon. A few days later, the balloon always has less gas in it. It never has more gas. Energy always runs down. That is the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Remember, this is a law of thermodynamics. That means that this law of science is a rule - it always holds true. Dr. Arthur Eddington wrote:

The Second Law of Thermodynamics holds, I think, the supreme position among the laws of nature…[If you hold a theory which is] found to be against the Second Law of Thermodynamics I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation (Quoted by John D. Barrow, The World Within the World, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1988, p. 122).

Dr. Eddington said that the Second Law of Thermodynamics is unchangeable. Every star, every society, every living creature, and every man and woman will lose strength and finally run down and die.

That happened to Dr. W. A. Criswell last week. He was the pastor emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. This great preacher got weaker and weaker, and finally, at the age of 92, Dr. Criswell died. That's the Second Law of Thermodynamics operating on a human being.

Last Thursday, the Los Angeles Times had a news story titled, "A Truthful Glow From Galaxy's Center" (January 10, 2002, p. A-18). The news story said, "An X-ray telescope has taken the clearest shot ever of our galaxy's center, a landscape of dying stars and 'burping' black holes." What a picture! The very galaxy that our world is in is dying, "a landscape of dying stars and 'burping' black holes." I saw that Chandra X-ray telescope photograph, and it is astonishing. The galaxy looks like a giant display of fireworks. But you know what happens when you shoot off fireworks, don't you? They go off, and then they sputter and die. The next day the fireworks you shot off the night before are cold and lifeless. And that's what's happening to our galaxy and our universe. The Second Law of Thermodynamics is acting and the stars are blowing up and being sucked into cold black holes.

Now Dr. Eddington said:

[If you hold a theory which is] against the Second Law of Thermodynamics I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation (ibid.).

What about the theory of evolution? The Second Law of Thermodynamics is one of the greatest arguments against Darwinian evolution. You see, evolution teaches that more and more complex beings come from less complex ones.

Evolution teaches that more and more complex forms of life evolve from less complex ones. This is against the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Dr. Whitcomb and Dr. Morris say:

The almost infinite accumulation of improbabilities in the theory of total evolution is nothing less than a denial of the Second Law of Thermodynamics - despite the fact that it has always been verified experimentally wherever tested (John C. Whitcomb and Henry M. Morris, The Genesis Flood Phillipsburg, New Jersey: Presbyterian and Reformed, 1989, p. 226).

The theory of total evolution rests on shaky ground. The survival of the fittest? No way! The law says the opposite! And many scientists realize it - even though they may not admit it publicly - yet. Why do they go on clinging to this Victorian theory? Simply because they are unwilling to believe the alternative - that God created man.

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7).

This is a much better explanation than the Darwinian concept, that doesn't square up to the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Creation is also better because it shows that you are a human being, not just an animal. Yes, you have sinned, but God sent Jesus Christ to die for your sins and to rise from the dead. You can be saved by Jesus because you are a human being - a special creation of God - not just a piece of dead meat.

Come into this church! Be here at every service. Why be lonely? Come home - to church - and to Christ!
