GOD IS RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG

by Mr. John Samuel Cagan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, December 11, 2016

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

God is “a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4). In Psalm 92:15 we read, “There is no unrighteousness in him.”

Today we often hear people say, “It wouldn't be right for God to send anyone to Hell.” Or, “It wouldn't be fair for people to be in Hell forever.” These people charge God with being wrong and unfair for threatening sinners with eternal damnation. But they are wrong and God is right, as I will show.

The Bible says, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25). And the answer to that question is “yes.” God always does right, and He never does wrong. He is “a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”

Since God is just and right it must be right for Him to judge you for your sins. Many theologians have shown that we are deeply sinful. They showed that God is right and you are wrong! God is “a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4). But you are a person full of iniquity, unjust and sinful are you! You see, God is right and you are wrong.

And you are so strongly and stubbornly wrong that it is right for God to punish you. It is right for Him to give you up to reprobation. It is right for Him to cast you into Hell forever.

I. First, God is right and you are wrong.

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

You are interested in yourself. You want an easy life. You want a life with as little suffering as possible. You do not want to be a Christian. A Christian has to deny himself. A Christian has to endure pain. You want pleasure, not pain.

A woman in our church who was recently converted had the realization that she was selfish. She realized that she had always been selfish. She said, “I thought of myself and my own life, that nobody had to teach me to sin even when I was small. I was already self-centered. [I was already] sinful because I was born in sin. [I] grew older, and I started sinning more and more boldly without feeling much guilt.” This woman was born selfish. She was born caring only about herself, and as she grew older she became increasingly more self-interested. She did not stop to notice that it was her own natural tendency to put herself first, until the Holy Spirit opened her eyes to the truth. Then she could be honest about herself and her condition. Then she could know that God was right, and she was wrong.

You are not honest with yourself. You are not like the woman who realized how selfish and sinful she was. You do not think that of yourself at all. Instead, you consider yourself a victim. Your favorite subject is every negative and painful event that ever happened to you. You remember the time your mother did you wrong. You rehearse how mean your father was to you. You go back to some terrible thing that happened to you over and over again to justify your spiritual condition. You blame the way you are on how others have treated you. Rather than put those painful memories out of your mind, you cherish them. Those memories are your excuse for your spiritual and personal stagnation. You do not take personal ownership of your situation.

You are like Adam, who once he had eaten the forbidden fruit, began to blame Eve for his sin. You are like Eve, who once confronted with her sin of eating the forbidden fruit, blamed the serpent. Doubtlessly, Satan had a good reason for his sin as well. There is always someone to blame, some excuse to reference, some good explanation for why you are the way you are. But what are you going to do about it? Accept the responsibility for yourself – for your soul – regardless of who else had something to do with it. You heard me preach a sermon called “Thank God for our Pastor!” I told you about how Dr. Hymers had to overcome great difficulties in order to achieve the great success he has had. For every terrible thing that has happened to you, he has experienced five worse, more intense negative things. Be honest with yourself. Admit you are to blame for the way that you are. The Bible says, “The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12).

God is right and you are wrong. At the Last Judgment, God will hold you responsible for your own life. God will not be wrong to do this. God will be right to do this. Accept the blame for your life and for your sin.

Another woman who was recently converted in our church recounted how she was stuck in a lost condition because she had been looking for a feeling, rather than Christ. The woman said, “For a long time, I kept trying to look for a feeling to prove my salvation. [Even] though Dr. Hymers and Dr. Cagan told me over and over again – not to look for a feeling…I just could not get myself out of the groove of trying to look for a feeling.” This woman kept insisting in her own heart that she was right, and that Dr. Hymers, Dr. Cagan, and God were wrong. She did not believe that she could be saved through faith in Christ. She believed that she had to be saved by a “feeling” in Christ.

The Bible says, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). But this woman did not believe that. You do not believe that. You do not believe the Bible when it tells you that faith in Christ is your salvation. Your trust is in your senses. You believe only in what you can feel. Because you cannot close your eyes and feel Christ, you will not trust Him. You are wrong. God is right. God says that salvation is through faith in Christ. You must either continue trusting in your senses and feelings until you are burning in the fires of Hell, or you must admit that you are wrong, that God is right, and trust Jesus by faith and without a feeling.

It is impossible for a sinner to be convinced – that God is right, and you are wrong. Only by the grace of God and the work of the Holy Spirit can a sinner do that. I myself struggled back and forth with God for many sleepless nights over it. I did everything in my power to push God and my sin out of my mind, because I knew God was right. I knew God was right, and I was wrong, but I did not want to admit it. I wanted to continue on as if I was right. The reality that I was wrong kept rapping at the windows of my soul. The more I tried to ignore it, the more obvious the evasions became. God was going to have my attention.

That experience was very painful. But I am so thankful that God showed me how wrong I was in my sinfulness. You do not want to admit you are wrong. So you will have to be convinced that you are wrong. You will have to realize that everything you have done is wrong. You will have to realize that even the person that you are, is wrong. You have to be convinced that God is right, and you are wrong.

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

II. Second, it is right for God to give you up to reprobation.

Dr. Henry C. Thiessen said,

Final hardening is the sin against the Holy Spirit and is unpardonable, because the soul…has ceased to be receptive of divine influence (H. C. Thiessen, Introductory Lectures in Systematic Theology, Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1949, p. 270).

The Bible says,

“Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears” (Hebrews 12:16-17).

Esau tried to repent, but it was too late! He stands forever as an example of a man who waited too long to be saved. He committed the unpardonable sin.

Was it right for God to give Esau over to reprobation? Yes – God was right to give up on Esau! God is “a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4). God is right and you are wrong.

III. Third, it is right for God to cast you into Hell.

The Bible says,

“The fearful and unbelieving…and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8).

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

“And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 25:30).

Will it be right for God to throw you into Hell? Yes it will! He is “a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4). “Far be it from God, that he should do wickedness” (Job 34:10). “There is no unrighteousness in him’ (Psalm 92:15). It is the right thing for God to send you to Hell. Why?

(1)  You did not think seriously about Christ. You did not seek Him.

(2)  You did not think about your sins or how to get your sins removed from God's record.

(3)  You thought little about Jesus' death on the Cross to pay for your sins and wash them away by His Blood.

(4)  You argued in your mind when you heard this sermon. You were actually arguing with God – who revealed every one of these truths in the Bible.

(5)  You committed many sins you wouldn't want anyone to know about. But God knows about them!

Yes – you certainly deserve to be in Hell. God is right and you are wrong! It is right, it is correct, for God to send you to the flames.

You have neglected the great salvation God offers, and the Bible says,

“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?”
        (Hebrews 2:3).

God is right and you are wrong!

Christ died on the Cross to make a full payment for your sins. He went through Hell on the Cross so you don’t have to go to Hell in eternity. “His blood atones for all our race, and sprinkles now the throne of grace,” said Charles Wesley. And he was right!

But you must admit that God is just and right and fair – and you must admit that you are a sinner in deep rebellion against God. You must also admit that God is right and that you are completely wrong. Then, you must trust Jesus. God did not send Jesus to condemn you. He sent His Son so you “through him might be saved” (John 3:17).

Jesus did not stay on that Cross. He arose, a flesh and bone body, on the first Easter. The angel said,

“He is not here, for he is risen” (Matthew 28:6).

And today Jesus Christ is alive physically, in Heaven, in another dimension, seated on the right hand of God the Father (cf. Mark 16:19; Hebrews 10:12; etc.).

I want you to look to Jesus by faith this morning. Turn your back on your life of sin and trust Jesus. He will save you! He will save you! He will save you now!

Because He loves you, Jesus will cleanse your sins by His Blood – and He will do it now – once and forever! Dr. Hymers, please come and close this service.
