As I said this morning and last Sunday night the Greek word translated "fables" in our text means "fiction or "myths." I pointed out that Dr. Henry M. Morris believes that this verse refers, among other things, to the theory of evolution (cf. Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., The Defender's Study Bible, note on II Timothy 4:4).

I believe that Dr. Morris was right when he said that "fables" in our text include a belief in evolution. I also noted that the Oxford scholar C. S. Lewis (late in life - in private correspondence) said that he had come to believe that evolution was the "central lie" of our time. By that phrase, I take it that he meant evolution was the philosophical basis for many beliefs in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The concept of "the survival of the fittest" lies behind many of the ideologies that Western man believes. And I will deal with three of those ideologies tonight: imperialism, racism, and abortion.

I. First, what is imperialism?

The Encyclopedia Britannica gives this definition:

Imperialism, a policy aiming at the formation and maintenance of empires, has been one of the decisive factors in ancient and in modern history. Politically, it represented an attempt to unite several different nationalities or racial groups under one government which, by the extent of its territory and the wealth of its resources, would form a great power. Ideologically, it represented generally an attempt to justify imperial expansion. The origin of empires is to be sought generally in conquest, their maintenance in the exercise of overwhelming power or prestige, the justification in the real or alleged superiority of the conquering or imperial group over the conquered or colonial groups (Encyclopedia  Britannica,  1946  edition,  volume  12,  page  122).

The Greeks and Romans had empires in ancient times. In modern times, the most important Western imperialism was that of the British Empire, which flourished in the nineteenth century under Queen Victoria's rule.

Even today, we see on the world stage the faded importance of the British Empire in the current conflict with Iraq. It is no surprise to those who understand the British imperialism of the recent past, that the United Kingdom, and her former colonies, such as Australia and New Zealand, have lined up behind the United States, another former British colony, in this war. The war against Saddam Hussein is mainly a war being carried out by Britain and her former colonies, united together against what they, I think correctly, perceive to be a threat to the Western world - and particularly to the English-speaking peoples.

I must not be diverted into discussing the merit of this war, although I do believe it has merit, but rather to point out that the common enemy of the English-speaking world is actually, when the bottom line is reached, perceived by Prime Minister Blair and President Bush to be Islam. They don't come right out and say this - but it certainly is in their minds - and I think rightly so.

Fascism is no longer a real threat to the West. Neither is Communism, which was dealt a near fatal blow by the policies of President Ronald Reagan, and his successor, George Bush Sr. Bush Jr., I think, sees fanatical Islam as the new threat to the Western democracies. I am convinced that Prime Minister agrees with him.

There can be no question that the attack on Iraq by the English-speaking coalition of nations is imperialistic. Mr. Bush has said as much in several recent speeches. He wants the people in Iraq to have the same liberties and freedoms we have in the West. He is willing to use force to ensure that they do. I see this as a modern form of imperialism. But you must understand that I do not think all imperialism is bad.

II. Second, what motivated the British Imperialism
of the late nineteenth century?

The Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century affected imperialism. Control was based upon the lack of technical knowledge among the peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Encyclopedia Britannica says that the earlier imperialism was motivated largely by Christianity:

Nowhere was this humanitarianism as vital as in Great Britain where it found support in the surviving Christian tradition of the Puritan revolution and in…John Milton and John Locke. These tendencies were strengthened in the early Victorian period: a synthesis was sought between empire and liberty…in the effort to bring the occidental concepts of political liberty and human dignity to oriental nations by their education in the English tradition and by the institution of an impartial administration under law. British liberal imperialism fulfilled in this education of native peoples an important mission: the results, the inculcation of ideas of liberty, self-government, and individual dignity… (ibid.).

In short, early Victorian imperialism was motivated largely by a strong Christian influence. The East India Company may have been based on exploitation, but it carried missionaries with it, who introduced the benefits of English law, politics, and religion to many backward areas of the world.

The Christian base of early Victorian imperialism underwent a subtle change as the nineteenth century went on. The Encyclopedia Britannica says:

This new period of imperialism at the end of the 19th century found its spiritual support in…social Darwinism, in all the theories glorifying power and success, which had swept over Europe…Racial theories seemed to give to this new attitude, which was in opposition to all traditional [i.e. Christian] values of morality, a justification by "science" and "nature," the belief in which was almost becoming the dominant faith of the period (Encyclopedia Britannica, ibid., page 122A).

Thus social Darwinism became the driving force behind imperialism. Instead of "taking the gospel to the heathen," the English came to be more motivated by a feeling of racial superiority, and felt the need to control "primitive peoples."

Cecil Rhodes was motivated by the social Darwinism of his age in his desire to dominate the people of South Africa. David Livingstone, on the other hand, was motivated by Christianity to stop the slave trade and bring the gospel to the people. So you have these two motives behind colonization - the older, Christian motive and the newer motive based on social Darwinism.

Why is this important to you? It is important because it shows that ideas have consequences. The idea of Darwinian evolution introduced a completely exploitative form of imperialistic control over "inferior races." The very idea of "inferior races" comes directly out of Darwin's theory. It is not a Biblical idea at all.

The Bible teaches that all human races are equal because God

"hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth" (Acts 17:26).

The same truth is given in the Book of Revelation:

"And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth" (Revelation 5:9-10).

Thus, the New Testament teaches the absolute equality of all races. There is no such thing as an "inferior race" in the Bible.

III. Third, where did the idea of "inferior races" come from?

Where did the idea of "inferior races" come from? You got it! That idea comes from Darwinian evolution! Listen to this quotation from Charles Darwin. This is what Darwin wrote, in his book, The Descent of Man (1901, pp. 241-242):

At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even as the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between a Negro or Australian [aborigine] and the gorilla.

Thomas Huxley was Darwin's main disciple. Huxley said:

It may be quite true that some negroes are better than some white men, but no rational man, cognizant of the facts, believes that the average negro is the equal, still less superior, of the average white man. The highest places in the hierarchy of civilization will assuredly not be within the reach of our dusky cousins (Thomas Huxley, Lectures and Lay Sermons, 1865, page 115).

Adolf Hitler was the biggest champion of racism in the twentieth century. He exterminated six million Jews because he believed they were an inferior race. He also believed that Asians and Negroes were "inferior" to the White race. Where did Hitler get these ideas? He got them directly from Darwinian evolution. Daniel Gasman writes:

[Hitler] stressed and singled out the idea of biological evolution as the most forceful weapon against traditional religion and he repeatedly condemned Christianity for its opposition to the teachings of evolution. For Hitler, evolution was the hallmark of modern science and culture (Daniel Gasman, The Scientific Origins of National Socialism: Social Darwinism in Ernst Haeckel and the German Monist League, 1971, p. 168).

Sir Arthur Keith said:

We see Hitler devoutly convinced that evolution produces the only real basis for a national policy. The means he adopted to secure the destiny of his race and people were organized slaughter, which has drenched Europe with blood (Sir Arthur Keith, Evolution and Ethics, 1947, p. 28).

Dr. Henry F. Osborne, late professor of biology and zoology at Columbia University, was president of the American Museum of Natural History Board of Trustees. Dr. Osborne was a leading evolutionist. He said:

The Negroid stock is even more ancient than the Caucasian and Mongolians as may be proved by an examination not only of the brain, of the hair, of the bodily characteristics, but of the instincts, the intelligence. The standard intelligence of the average adult Negro is similar to that of the eleven-year-old youth of the species Homo sapiens (Henry F. Osborne, Ph.D., "The Evolution of Human Races," Natural History, January/February 1926, p. 129; reprinted April 1980).

A leading evolutionist, who influenced Hitler, was Dr. Edwin Conklin, professor of biology at Princeton University from 1908 until 1933. Dr. Conklin was the president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1936. That was the year the Olympics were held in Berlin. At the beginning of the Olympics, Hitler said that the White races would win over the Negroid and yellow races. But when Jesse Owens, a Black man, won four gold medals in track competition, Hitler tried to ban all Blacks from further participation! Hitler's ideas about race are clearly revealed in this quotation from the evolutionist Dr. Osborne:

Comparison of any modern race with the Neanderthal or Heidelberg ["ape men"] types shows that all have changed, but probably the Negroid races more closely resemble the original stock than the white or yellow races (Edwin Conklin, Ph.D., The Direction of Human Evolution, 1921, p. 34).

This quotation shows how evolutionists think: Black people, according to them, are closer to "ape men" than White people or Asians! Black people have not evolved as far, and are closer to "the original stock."

Then Dr. Osborne said:

Every consideration should lead those who believe in the superiority of the white race to strive to preserve its purity and to establish and maintain the segregation of the races, for the longer this is maintained, the greater the preponderance [superiority and influence] of the white race will be (ibid., p. 53).

These are the thoughts of a leading evolutionist, professor at Columbia University and president of the American Museum of Natural History Board of Trustees.

Remember that it was Darwin himself who said that Blacks are far closer to gorillas and baboons than White people are (cf. Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man, 1901, pp. 241-242).

Dr. Donald Boys said:

The major haters [hate mongers] of the last 100 years have been evolutionists, Nietzsche (who repeatedly asserted that God was dead), Hitler (who called for the breeding of a master race and for the annihilation of millions of misfits), Mussolini, Marx, Engels and Stalin have all been outspoken evolutionists, and these people and their theories have been responsible for the slaughter of multi-millions of people (Donald Boys, Ph.D., Evolution: Fact or Fiction?, 1994, p. 96).

"And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" (II Timothy 4:4).

IV. Fourth, what impact has evolution had on abortion?

The following information regarding Planned Parenthood was produced by Life Research Institute, January, 2001. This article shows what a great impact the theory of evolution has had on abortion. In fact, widespread abortion is the direct result of Darwin's theory of evolution. The idea of abortion was already planted by Darwin in his book, The Descent of Man (written in 1871). He said, as I quoted earlier, "The civilized races will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world." Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, read those words of Darwin and did exactly what he said!

Facts about Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood

(Though much quoted herein is old, I will show later that Planned Parenthood today vigorously upholds Sanger's philosophy.)

Margaret Sanger said about her 1939 Negro Project, "We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out the idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members" (Linda Gordon, Woman's Body, Woman's Right, New York, Grossman, 1974, 1976, p. 332-333).

Clarence Gamble, president of the American Eugenics Research Association, said, "There is a great danger that we will fail because the Negroes think it a plan for extermination. Hence let's appear to let the colored run it as we appear to let the south do the conference in Atlanta" (ibid., p. 333). Under this policy, Planned Parenthood of America hired a full-time "Negro Consultant" in 1944 (ibid., p. 353).

The entire operation [Sanger's 1939 Negro Project] then was a ruse - a manipulative attempt to get Blacks to cooperate in their own elimination.

The project was quite successful. Its genocidal intentions were carefully camouflaged beneath several layers of condescending social-service rhetoric and organizational expertise...Soon clinics throughout the South were distributing contraceptives to Blacks and Margaret's dream of discouraging "the defective and diseased elements of humanity" from their "reckless and irresponsible swarming and spawning" was at last being fulfilled (Margaret Sanger, The Pivot of Civilization, New York, Brentano's, 1922, p. 108).

In a 1926 speech at Vassar, Sanger said the nation needed to follow the "drastic immigration laws" of 1924 with methods "to cut down on the rapid multiplication of the unfit and undesirable at home" (Margaret Sanger, "The Function of Sterilization," speech delivered at Vassar College, August 5, 1926. Described in The Legacy of Malthus by Allan Chase, New York, 1977, p. 658).

In a March, 1939 letter, Margaret Sanger explained to Frank Boudreau, director of the Milbank Memorial Fund: "That is not asking or suggesting a cradle competition between the intelligent and the ignorant, but a drastic curtailment of the birth rate at the source of the unfit, the diseased and the incompetent...The birth control clinics all over the country are doing their utmost to reach the lower strata [the minorities] of our population" (Linda Gordon, Women's Body, Women's Right, p. 359).

To stop this "multiplication," Sanger could be harsh. Her book, The Pivot of Civilization, has a chapter called "The Cruelty of Charity." In it she blasts as "insidiously injurious" programs to provide "medical and nursing facilities to slum mothers." In other words, Sanger wanted ethnic cleansing. Instead of helping the poor, she considered them (particularly Blacks, Hispanics, and Jewish immigrants) slum dwellers who would soon overrun the boundaries of their slums and contaminate  the  better  elements  of  society  with  their  inferior  genes.

Throughout the 200+ pages of The Pivot of Civilization Sanger called for the elimination of human weeds: "for the cessation of charity, for the segregation of morons, misfits, and maladjusted," and for the sterilization of "genetically inferior races" (Margaret Sanger, The Pivot of Civilization, p. 264). In this same book she argued that organized attempts to help the poor were the "surest sign that our civilization has bred, is breeding, and is perpetuating...defectives, delinquents, and dependents" (Elasah Drogin, Margaret Sanger, Father of Modern Society, New Hope, Kentucky, CUL Publications, 1980, p. 45).

"Margaret Sanger is responsible, more than anyone else, for keeping alive international racism. She played the attractive hostess for racist thinkers all over the world. Organizing the First World Population Conference in Geneva in 1926, she invited Clarence C. Little, Edward A. East, Henry Pratt Fairchild, and Raymond Pearl - all infamous racists" (Elasah Drogin, Margaret Sanger, Father of Modern Society, p. 109).

In 1932 [the Birth Control Review] outlined Margaret's "Plan for Peace," calling for coercive sterilization, mandatory segregation, and rehabilitative concentration camps for all "disgenic stocks" (Birth Control Review, April 1932, p. 107; see Drogin, pp. 11-38).

In 1933, the Birth Control Review published "Eugenic Sterilization: An Urgent Need" by Ernst Rudin, who was Hitler's director of genetic sterilization and a founder of the Nazi Society for Racial Hygiene (Birth Control Review, April 1933, p. 102). And later that same year, it published an article by Leon Whitney entitled, "Selective Sterilization," which adamantly praised and defended the Third Reich's racial programs (Birth Control Review, vol. 17, issue 4, 1933, p. 85).

Margaret Sanger and former Planned Parenthood President Alan Guttmacher were both listed in 1956 as members of the American Eugenics Society, Inc. Today, Planned Parenthood vigorously supports Margaret Sanger's philosophies: In 1992, Planned Parenthood's immediate past president, Faye Wattleton, won Planned Parenthood's coveted Margaret Sanger Award. The following is quoted from Planned Parenthood Federation of America's 1992 Annual Report, page 13: "THE PPFA MARGARET SANGER AWARD, Planned Parenthood's highest honor, was presented in 1992 to former PPFA President Faye Wattleton. Planned Parenthood's national leader from 1978 until March 1992, Ms. Wattleton exemplified the courage and ideals of Margaret Sanger, PPFA's founder." Planned Parenthood also has a Margaret Sanger Clinic.

The Racism of Planned Parenthood Today

A racial analysis of abortion statistics is quite revealing. According to a Health and Human Services Administration report, as many as forty-three percent of all abortions are performed on Blacks and another ten percent on Hispanics (Allan Chase, The Legacy of Malthus, p. 411). This, despite the fact that Blacks only make up eleven percent of the total U.S. population and Hispanics only about eight percent (A. L. Thornton, "U.S. Statistical Survey: A Reanalysis of the 1980 Census Figures for Population Distribution and Composition," Demographics Today, March, 1983, p. 62). A National Academy of Sciences investigation released more conservative - but no less telling - figures: thirty-two percent of all abortions are performed on minority mothers (Allan Chase, The Legacy of Malthus, p. 411).

During the 1980s when Planned Parenthood shifted its focus from community-based clinics, it again targeted inner-city minority neighborhoods (Although Planned Parenthood is a primary instigator in the School-Based Clinic movement, only rarely does an affiliate become institutionally involved in their day to day operation).

Of the more than one hundred school-based clinics that have opened nationwide in the last decade, none have been at substantially all-White schools (Carl R. de Vries, Benjamin Goldstein, and Linda Evankirov, Teen Pregnancy: Crisis, Solution, and Opposition, Boston, Educational Software Information Group, 1987, p. 14; and Roberta Weiner, Teen Pregnancy: Impact on the Schools, Alexandria, Virginia, Capitol Publications, 1987). None have been at suburban middle-class schools. All have been at Black, minority, or ethnic schools (ibid.).

Planned Parenthood itself reports (1992 Service Report, 1992) that of the 132,314 abortions it did in 1991, 23.2% were on African Americans, 12.5% were on Hispanics, and 7% were on other minorities. Thus, the total abortions on minorities is 42.7%. But minorities comprise only 19.7% of the U.S. population (Statistical Abstract of the United States, 1992, page 17). Therefore, relative to population Planned Parenthood preferred to abort minorities three times ({42.7/(100-42.7)}/{19.7/(100-19.7)} = 3) as much as whites.

"There is no way you can escape the implications," argues Black financial analyst William L. Davis. "When an organization has a history of racism, when its literature is openly racist, when its goals are self-consciously racial, and when its programs invariably revolve around race, it doesn't take an expert to realize that the organization is indeed racist. Really now, how can anyone believe anything about Planned Parenthood except that it is a hive of elitist bigotry, prejudice, and bias? Just because the organization has a smattering of minority staffers in key positions does nothing to dispel the plain facts" (George Grant, Grand Illusions: The Legacy of Planned Parenthood, Brentwood, Tennessee, Wolgemuth and Hyatt, 1984, p. 98).

Blacks make up 12.1 percent of the U.S. population, but Blacks accounted for 35.9 percent of all abortions in 1999, as compared to 31.9 percent in 1990 (Calculations made by Ed Szymkowiak, director of Stop Planned Parenthood International, from numbers from "Abortion Surveillance - United States, 1997," Centers for Disease Control, December 8, 2000, p. 17). This is for Planned Parenthood abortions but abortions by others, too.

Four out of every seven Black babies are now killed by abortion. This is the direct result of evolution, "the survival of the fittest," in the thinking of abortionists. And remember that the evolutionist abortionists want to "educate" Hispanic and Asian women, so they can stop them from having babies too! All of this because they believe in evolution - the central lie of our time!

"And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" (II Timothy 4:4).

Evolution is the religion of our culture. Christianity is permitted to exist, but evolution is the universal religion. Every high school student understands that. Every college student understands that. They permit other religions to exist - but the only religion they endorse is Darwin's evolution. And evolution is a religion, you know. It's a world-view - and it's a myth - and a belief-system - about God and the cosmos.

Now, to become a real Christian, you must give up evolution entirely. You must turn your back on the world and its false religion. And then you must turn to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He died on the Cross to pay the penalty for your sins. He rose from the grave and ascended to the third Heaven, where He is now seated at the right hand of God. Turn away from the world and its false religion of evolution. Turn to Jesus Christ, and be washed from your sins by His Blood. And then come into the full fellowship of this gospel preaching church! Why be lonely? Come home - to church!
